UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet has been recommended as the sole candidate for the House of Representatives elections from Bhaktapur Constituency No. 2.

The Bhaktapur District Committee meeting recommended him as a single candidate. Chairman Bachan Deuja said that Secretary Basnet's single recommendation was made.

In the 2079 BS election, Basnet, who was a candidate from Bhaktapur-2, was defeated by Durlav Thapa of the Congress. Thapa won with 24,239 votes, while Basnet got 23,282 votes.

In 2074 BS, he defeated Damannath Dhungana of the Congress and was elected as a member of the House of Representatives.

After the multi-party restoration in Bhaktapur-2 in 2046 BS, the Congress and the NEMKIPA have been winning in turn. In this constituency, where Jagnath Acharya of the Nepali Congress won in 2048 BS, Asha Kaji Basukala of the Nepali Congress Party won in the mid-term elections of 2051 BS, Lekhnath Neupane of the Nepali Congress Party again in the 2056 BS elections, Sunil Prajapati of the Nepali Congress Party won in the 2064 BS elections, Rameshwor Dhungel of the Nepali Congress Party won in the 2070 BS elections, and Basnet of the Nepali Congress won in the 2074 BS elections.
