Congress General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma have formally called for a special general convention. On Thursday, General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma issued a notice calling for the special general convention.

The notice also states that the regular general convention scheduled for December 26-28 has also been postponed. Even though the establishment party is not ready, the general secretaries have issued a notice to hold a special general convention on December 27-29.

'It is hereby informed that the agenda of the regular general convention determined by the meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee held on December 15 has been postponed to be approved by the next meeting,' the notice says.

After the date of the general convention was fixed, when the renewal of active membership reached the final stage, the general secretaries have also informed that a total of 579,395 active membership renewals have been completed. After the renewal process is completed by the district working committees in Khotang, Bara, Kanchanpur and Kailali districts, the total number of renewals is estimated to reach more than 600,000. They also stated that 195,737 new active membership entries were made during this period.

It has been decided that the acting president will be requested to call a special general convention, but if not called, the general secretaries will call it. 54 percent of the Congress's general convention delegates have submitted a petition to the party's central office, Sanepa, on Asoj 28 demanding a special general convention.

There is a mandatory provision in the party statute that if forty percent of the delegates sign and request a special one, it must be called within three months. However, after the establishment party tried to move forward by ignoring the mandatory provision of the statute, the general secretaries were forced to call a special general convention, said another leader, Baldev Timilsina.

In order to make the special general convention ineffective, a schedule was also brought with the agreement of the establishment party to hold a central general convention from Poush 26-28. The schedule was affected after the distribution and renewal lists of active membership were not received from all districts.

After that, general secretaries Thapa and Sharma proposed to hold only ward and regional conventions to hold the central general convention on the specified date. After holding the ward and regional conventions, the door opens to hold a central general convention. However, Subash Pokharel said that the application for a special general convention registered on Asoj 28 was active because the establishment party was not ready for it.
