Agni Kharel has filed his candidacy for the post of secretary in the 11th general convention of UML as an independent candidate. He had claimed the post of secretary on behalf of KP Sharma Oli. However, after Oli did not make it to the panel, he filed his candidacy as an independent candidate.
Lekhraj Bhatta, Padma Aryal, Chhabilal Bishwakarma, Khagaraj Adhikari, Yamalal Kandel, Sherdhan Rai, Hikmat Karki, Mahesh Basnet and Rajan Bhattarai have been nominated for the post of secretary from the Oli panel.
Kharel was known as Oli's confidant. Earlier, he was appointed as an expert advisor to the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
Kharel, who was also the former Law Minister, was previously appointed Attorney General during Prime Minister Oli's tenure in 2074 BS. Kharel, who was appointed Attorney General on 2074 Falgun 2074 BS, resigned on 2077 Chaitra 2077 BS. He resigned after Prime Minister Oli was dissatisfied with his inability to properly defend the government in the Supreme Court against the dissolution of the House of Representatives.
Kharel from Gauradaha, Jhapa, was the Law Minister in the Oli-led government. Kharel became an MP from the UML's proportional quota in the first Constituent Assembly, and was nominated by the Council of Ministers and made a member of the CA in the second Constituent Assembly. Kharel has been involved in the legal field since 2042 BS and has also served as the General Secretary of the Bar Association.
