Madhesh Chief Minister Yadav has three options

What you should know

Politics in Madhesh Province has once again become volatile after the Supreme Court issued a mandate to the provincial chief to seek a vote of confidence within 24 hours against Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav, failing which he must initiate the process of forming a new government in the province in accordance with Article 168(2) of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court has put party leaders and MPs who are rushing to the provincial capital Janakpur on alert after the order. After the order, Madhesh Chief Minister Yadav has three options.

First: If the vote of confidence is not enough, resign, second: Face the vote of confidence in the provincial assembly and third: Automatically be relieved of his post after 24 hours.

UML provincial MP Pramod Kumar Jaisawal said that he had a phone conversation with Chief Minister Yadav on Tuesday morning. 'I am in discussion, I will tell you later,' said UML MP Jaisawal. 'The Chief Minister is in consultation with the Congress. We have not had much discussion.'

Congress Chief Whip Kubar Kant Jha said that it is not yet clear on the issue of calling a meeting of the provincial assembly. He also clarified that there will be no talks or discussions with the UML. ‘All 22 Congress MPs will arrive in Janakpur by 1:30 pm,’ Jha said, ‘We have put all MPs on alert.’

Meanwhile, as the government has not decided whether to call the provincial assembly meeting or not, seven parties have verbally requested Deputy Speaker Babita Raut Ishar to call the provincial assembly meeting at 4 pm on Tuesday.’ According to LSP MP Upendra Mahato, the Deputy Speaker has assured that the information will be issued after discussions. ‘We have requested to call the provincial assembly meeting at 4 pm with another agenda,’ Mahato said, ‘In the meantime, a letter has come from the government, the meeting can be moved forward with the same agenda.’

The dispute reached the Supreme Court after the then provincial chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari appointed Yadav, the leader of the parliamentary party of the largest party, UML, as the chief minister in accordance with Article 168 (3) of the constitution. Amid this tension, Province Chief Bhandari and Speaker Ramchandra Mandal have already lost their positions.
