Some of our conclusions cannot provide correct guidance, we need to update ourselves: Pokharel

What you should know

UML Senior Vice President Ishwor Pokharel has said that the party's upcoming 11th National Convention should review the revised statute and the political situation.

Issuing a statement today, he stressed that the general convention should discuss the developments after the Genji movement on Bhadra 23 and 24. The UML leadership has been stating that the next national convention is only for the selection of leadership since the second statutory general convention was held on Bhadra 20-22. Chairman KP Sharma Oli had made a public statement after giving his opinion on contemporary issues that the general convention leadership will be selected.

'The situation has changed drastically after the Genji movement. The political situation, political parties, government, and institutions like parliament are not the same as they were yesterday. In such a situation, some of our conclusions from yesterday cannot guide the present and future correctly. We need to update ourselves,' Pokharel said in the statement, 'The role of the general convention representative will be to participate in the debate and reach new conclusions according to the ideas and beliefs specified by the guiding principle of our party, the people's multi-party democracy.'

Pokharel has said that we cannot move forward by ignoring the aspirations, hopes, dissatisfaction and anger of the new generation and the general public. 'It is necessary to accept the message it gives and the standard it seeks to establish, the psychology expressed in it. Accordingly, it is necessary to update our thoughts, working style and future plans,' he said. He also mentioned that the destruction of Bhadra 24 cannot be ignored under any pretext. 'We cannot raise national confidence by acquitting those involved in it. For that, we all need to abandon our insistence, previous stance and arrogance and build new faith and new hope. Nationalism, democracy, the constitution, national life and civil rights cannot be protected by inciting psychology as a supporter/opponent or plaintiff/defendant of the movement and destruction,' Pokharel said in the statement.

Stating that the situation has changed drastically since Bhadra 23-24, he mentioned that the political situation, political parties, government, and institutions like Parliament are not in the same condition as yesterday. 'In such a situation, some of our conclusions from yesterday cannot guide the present and future in the right way. We need to update ourselves,' he said.
