The Election Commission has held discussions with political parties regarding the National Assembly elections scheduled for Magh 11.
The discussion held at the Commission's office, Kantipath, was attended by Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, the Commissioner and representatives of nationally recognized and represented parties in the National Assembly, including the Nepali Congress, the Communist Party of Nepal (UML), and the CPN (Maoist Center).
Commission Secretary Mahadev Pantha said that the election program will be brought after consulting with the parties on the technical preparations for the National Assembly election.
This election is being held as per the legal provision that elections should be held 35 days before the end of the term of office of the members of the Assembly. The term of the 19 members of the Assembly ends on Falgun 21. Out of these, 18 members will be elected and one member will be nominated by the President.
The electoral college of the Assembly will consist of members of the Provincial Assembly, the chairperson/chief and vice-chairperson/deputy-chairperson of local bodies within the province. Each Provincial Assembly member has a voting weight of 48 and the chairperson/chief and vice-chairperson/deputy-chairperson have a voting weight of 18.
