Unified Socialists on the verge of a split

The Unified Socialist Party of Nepal (CPN) is on the verge of a split. After the Central Committee took a policy decision to unite with the Maoist Center on Friday, senior leaders Jhalanath Khanal, General Secretary Ghanshyam Bhusal and other leaders held a separate meeting on Saturday, expressing their disagreement.

A leader said that preparations are underway to form a ‘NCP Unified Socialist (Bhusal) Group’ under the coordination of General Secretary Bhusal. While the established party under the leadership of Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal is preparing to unite with the Maoist Center, the Bhusal group has called a central committee meeting of its party, saying that it will reorganize the party.

Bhusal group leader Damodar Aryal said that the meeting will urge everyone to stand in favor of the reorganization of the Unified Socialist. ‘We urge all leaders and cadres to stand in favor of the reorganization of the Unified Socialist,’ he said, adding that he will urge other leftist parties to reorganize as well, ‘We call on other leftist parties to reorganize.’

He said that Khanal, Bhusal, Vice President Ghanendra Basnet, Deputy General Secretary Bijay Poudel, Standing Committee members Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Ram Kumari Jhankri, Hari Parajuli and other former MPs participated in the meeting. He claims that 158 out of 455 central members of the Socialist Party have informed that they will stand in favor of the reorganization.

While there is a dispute over unity with the Maoists, the leaders standing in opposition are in dialogue with the UML. On Friday, UML Chairman Oli has called on the disgruntled leaders of the CPN-S to return home on Friday. UML leaders have already started dialogue with Khanal, Bhusal, and Jhankri. ‘Informal dialogue has already started with the leaders of the CPN-S. There is a dialogue going on about the Chairman Nepal side going to the Maoists and the dissenting side coming to the UML,’ said a UML leader. Under Oli’s direction, UML leaders have started talks with the S. Many leaders of the S have started analyzing that unity with the Maoists will further jeopardize the party’s existence. After the split of the CPN-S, leaders and cadres will unite with the UML and the Maoists.

General Secretary Bhusal, on the other hand, is in favor of a separate polarization led by the youth instead of going anywhere for left polarization. He understands that the left unity from the first generation will fulfill personal interests rather than that and that will not inspire hope in the country.

After UML Chairman Oli called for him to return home, senior CPN-S leader Khanal has put forward conditions such as abandoning the people's multi-party democracy and socialism with Nepali characteristics, and giving him a respected position. However, according to a UML leader, Oli is not positive about Khanal and General Secretary Bhusal being brought into the UML. Popular SK leader Ram Kumari Jhankri is in intensive talks with UML leaders.

On 2 Bhadra 2078, the CPN Unified Socialist Party was formed under the leadership of Madhav Kumar Nepal. The general convention held in Asad 2081 elected Nepal as the chairman. Despite winning 10 seats in the House of Representatives in the 2079 general election, it could not become a national party.
