The Election Commission is going to suggest to the government to mobilize the army from the beginning, keeping in mind the security sensitivity of the upcoming elections.
Earlier, the army was mobilized only a week or two before the election. The commission has stated that this time, the police, armed forces and the army will have to be mobilized in an integrated manner from the very beginning.
A meeting held between security agency officials and commission officials on Friday suggested that an integrated security plan should be implemented soon to reassure voters, political parties and employees about the security arrangements. The commission had also expressed the view that the armed forces and the army should be mobilized from the very beginning to provide support to the police, who are on the front lines of security.
Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari suggested in the meeting that all security agencies be mobilized in a coordinated manner before, during and after the voting. He said that policy and managerial facilitation for security arrangements is a high priority of the commission. According to commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, the security agencies have already started planned work to make security arrangements so that the elections are held in a clean, fair, free and fear-free environment.
Analyzing the weakening of police morale due to the protests on 23 and 24 Bhadra, the meeting reached a consensus that the armed forces and the army should be deployed in an integrated manner from the very beginning. Election Commissioner Sagun Shumsher Jabra said that the government will be urged to formulate and implement an integrated security plan as soon as possible to increase confidence in the security of citizens and to build trust among security agencies.
