Bhandari said that her membership dispute is not personal but related to the democratic practice of the party and called for unity and understanding.
What you should know
Even though former president Bidya Bhandari's membership dispute was not admitted in the second legislative convention of UML, she has written an open letter to the convention representative asking her to correct the decision to keep her membership renewal 'pending'.
Bhandari workers, who were not invited to the convention, distributed the appeal letter to the delegates outside the Godavari Sunrise Hall in Lalitpur. The
letter states, 'The principle of operation of the party organization is democratic centralization. So far our goals and objectives have not been achieved. To achieve that, we all need unity, understanding and activism. Therefore, I expect all members to be serious about this request and give a positive opinion and decision to maintain my membership. Also, I urge the party to correct its decision and create an atmosphere in the party to move forward unitedly for the sake of the country and the people.'
Bhandari has said that the question of her membership is not personal and that the beliefs of multi-party democracy of the people are against the method of achieving superiority through competition.
She said, 'Though the issue of my membership may seem private to some, it is a matter related to the faith, belief and rights of all members of the party. I have seen and understood from some of our comrades the hard struggle for democratization in the party in the past, the clearly written concept and the humiliation and pain they suffered in the process. At that time, I and other comrades were criticized, but we fought together for a fair voice. Those campaigns were crucial to success. But, all of them disappeared into oblivion so quickly? In fact, my support at that time was also for the benefit of the party. Therefore, the controversy raised regarding my membership is not merely personal, but rather it is intertwined with our party's methods, values and democratic practice. Deactivating the renewed membership is also contrary to the principles of initiative and competition accepted by the party.'
Bhandari mentioned that she has devoted a long time of her life for the country, the people and the party and said that she is constantly raising her voice for women's rights, human rights, justice and equality.
She has written in the letter, 'I have never given up with many struggles, difficulties and challenges. The question raised about my membership today is a serious one for me. This letter is not for my self defense but for the bright future of our party. Therefore, I have deep faith that you will understand this letter as protection of your rights, strength of the party, strong and lasting unity.'
Bhandari claims that if the democratic practice within the party is weak, the trust of the common people will decrease.
She added, 'If the law, methodology, constitution and democratic practices within the party organization become weak, it will not only affect the individual, but the entire party. If we do not abandon such a practice in time, our party's reputation, strength and unity between leaders and workers and people's faith and trust in us can be undermined.'
