It was very sad to read the news published in Kantipur with the title 'Supplies to sugarcane farmers reduced by half, because the Ministry of Finance said - there is no money in the treasury'. The government of Nepal has reduced the sugarcane subsidy to farmers from 70 per quintal to 35 rupees. Against which the farmers are now protesting.

Last November, the minimum support price of sugarcane was fixed at Rs 585 per quintal. Although the sugarcane mill has to pay the farmers, it is very difficult for the farmers to get it. It is unfortunate that the Ministry of Finance rejected the proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture of Rs 70 per quintal as an incentive for sugarcane production by the government on the pretext that there is no money in the government budget.

Last year, sugar mills across the country purchased 21.5 million quintals of sugarcane, so the farmers had to get more than 1.5 million quintals at the rate of 70 rupees. But since the Ministry of Agriculture has a small budget and no budget is coming from the Ministry of Finance, the government approved the proposal to reduce the amount of subsidy to be received from last year's budget by half and give it at the rate of 35 rupees.

In this way, about 600 sugarcane farmers from Morang to Kanchanpur are now protesting in Kathmandu after the government decided to reduce and ignore even the minimum amount that should be provided last year.

Every year, the government has to supply sugar by importing it from abroad. On the other hand, it will be difficult for the farmers of agricultural countries to get the price of sugarcane produced by cutting their arms, the government will not implement the decision that they will give subsidies and if the farmers will be embarrassed by pretending that the money has been paid, how will the farmers be excited about sugarcane production and how will they trust the government ?

I was surprised to hear the news that the subsidy given by the government has been cut by half. Where is the government's rule that the salaries and allowances of ministers, parliamentarians, employees, etc. should always be increased, but the subsidy given to the poor farmers should be cut? The Ministry of Finance has the answer to this ?

A farmer who works and eats all year cannot be killed . The Ministry of Finance has clarified that the subsidy for sugarcane farmers has been cut due to the lack of budget. This is very reprehensible. Not stopping the leakages, not stopping the corruption and not raising the arrears to be collected by the state and cutting the subsidy amount of the sugarcane farmers because there is a lack of money in the country? What else is more shameless than this?
