The poignant news of the 72-year-old Lokikumari Budhabare of Salyan touched the heart. Even though it is a natural right to get citizenship at the age of 16, he has not been able to get it yet.
Losing parents at a young age, breaking relationship with husband and not being able to take initiative for citizenship due to physical disability is a sad aspect. It was even more painful to hear that he had to be deprived of all the benefits from the state including social security due to lack of citizenship.
There are many citizens like Lokikumari Budha, who are forced to live a life without citizenship because they cannot get the necessary documents or relatives even when their identity is revealed. They are invisible to the state and deprived of all the rights of being citizens.
In this way, the state seems indifferent to give citizenship to these citizens who have been struggling for their existence for years. But on the other hand, some non-citizens have easily acquired Nepali citizenship under the guise of money and power. This incident clearly shows the double standards of the state. Real Nepali citizens are suffering without identity, while fake people are easily becoming citizens and are taking advantage of the country's resources and resources.
The problem of Lokikumari Budha is a representative case. There are hundreds of such Lokikumaris in our society, who have to be deprived of minimum human rights due to lack of citizenship. The government should conduct a special campaign for such real victims and provide citizenship and make the citizenship distribution process more transparent and fair. Let everyone's attention be drawn to such a serious issue and the relevant agencies should take immediate action to solve the problem.
