Mocked the slogan of the police as 'citizen's friend'
Actions taken against about 12,000 policemen in the last 6 years clearly shows how deep the corruption within the Nepal Police Organization is. The involvement of the police in illegal extortion, moreover, the increasing activity of the plainclothes police is a matter of concern.
Due to collusion between the police and smugglers, crime in the society is increasing instead of decreasing. When the big smugglers smuggle goods into Nepal under the 'setting' of the police, ordinary citizens have to suffer unnecessary hardships by the customs police even for the goods brought for household purposes. This made a mockery of the slogan of the police as 'citizen's friend'.
To improve the police, transparency and competence should be prioritized from the police recruitment process. The police need to be provided with modern training, technological equipment and proper remuneration. In-service moral education and regular monitoring should be made effective.
Anyone involved in corruption should be dealt with strictly according to the law and not on the basis of political access. To improve citizen-police relations, people-friendly behavior and community police services should be encouraged. Impunity must be put an end to by maintaining good governance within the police organization. Only if these steps are taken, the morale of the police will be high and the trust of the citizens can be won.
