The news of Kantipur titled "The world heard the audio of the minister's bribe 'deal', but the prime minister's governance commission did not hear it" has raised serious questions in the minds of the common people. It has exposed the rampant corruption, irregularities and lack of accountability in the country.
After the publication of this news, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli called the concerned minister to Baluwatar on Monday and asked for an explanation. However, instead of dismissing a minister who is accused of serious bribery, what about asking for an explanation and giving him immunity? Will the people accept the bribe 'deal' so much?
The then Prime Minister Oli dismissed the then Prime Minister Oli from the government on moral grounds after the audio of the then Communications Minister Gokul Baskota's bribery was made public. It was presented as an example of good governance. However, even though the audio of General Administration Minister Rajkumar Gupta, who is considered to be a confidant of Prime Minister Oli, has become public, the Prime Minister's Governance Commission and the government are limited to 'clearing the weeds', showing double standards.
It is clear that the bribery for the appointment of Kaski as the chairman of the Land Commission and Minister Gupta's involvement in it is an extreme misuse of public office. When the people expect good governance, this kind of corruption by the minister and the government not taking any action against it is disappointing. Prime Minister Oli's repeated promise that he will not do corruption and will not allow others to do it has now proved to be a hollow slogan.
The main opposition party and other MPs have also raised this issue in Parliament and Prime Minister Oli has demanded an answer in Parliament. The light step of the Prime Minister on such a sensitive issue has sent the message that corruption has been tolerated. This is not just a case of personal corruption of a minister but a serious question about the government's commitment to good governance.
It is necessary to immediately form a high-level investigation committee on this matter to punish the culprits according to the law and to put into practice the promises made by the Prime Minister about good governance.
