In a multi-ethnic, multicultural and multi-religious country like Nepal, the post of Prime Minister is not just an administrative chair, it is a national responsibility linked to the feelings, dreams and future of millions of people.
An airy statement made by a leader in such a sensitive position, untested, without historical evidence, is not only lighthearted, it is an insult to public trust. Recently, Prime Minister KP Sharma publicly expressed his 'speculation' that Lord Shiva might belong to the Chamling community. Such an irresponsible style has deeply hurt our nation's hope and confidence in the leadership. The question arises – is the prime minister's speech based on facts or is it limited only to the means of gaining popularity? Although he clarified his statement as 'not a claim, just a guess', every public statement made by a responsible person like the Prime Minister carries serious implications. In our society, which is highly sensitive to religious beliefs, historical beliefs and social diversity, such statements only create controversy, spread confusion and hurt tolerance.
