The SEE results, published on Friday, have created both excitement and anxiety among students, parents and teachers. A wrong trend is prevalent in our society at this time – judging children based on results and comparing them with others. But, have we ever thought, GPA or numbers only determine the future of children?
Congratulatory messages flood social media after SEE results. Some parents take pride in sharing their children's GPA, but this trend creates unnecessary pressure on low-scoring students and their parents. In Nepal's educational system, the practice of considering GPA as the sole measure of student ability has a negative impact on mental health in the long run. According to a study (UNICEF Nepal, 2021), the main cause of mental stress in adolescents is academic pressure and comparative culture. There are plenty of examples around us of board toppers also failing in the future due to the burden of results.
Getting a high GPA is great, but it's not the only goal in life. Many of the world's most successful people, such as Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, did not always excel in academic results, but they learned the art of taking risks in life, developing creativity and self-confidence. Like many entrepreneurs in Nepal, Vinod Chaudhary seems to have achieved success through practical skills and determination rather than academic results.
Parents should guide their children in the direction of making them a responsible and capable person, not as a number-getting device. Rather than comparing children to others, their interests, abilities and dreams should be encouraged. Instead of sharing grades on social media, children's hard work and dedication should be appreciated. According to psychologists, positive encouragement and confidence contribute greatly to a student's long-term success.
Come on, let's all celebrate the result, but let's not make it the sole basis for measuring the value of a child. Let's learn the art of living, because life is bigger than GPA.

After poor SEE results last year, the Prime Minister was furious with the teachers. To improve it, the government introduced a program to conduct online preparatory classes by expert teachers. There were many teachers in that class. Many students joined. Parents are interested. Needless to say, this year's result has increased by 13.94 percent compared to last year. All parties are to be thanked for this. The Prime Minister's announcement that the result will reach 70 percent next year has also come.
But improvement in SEE result percentage is not the only indicator of overall educational improvement. It is not possible to conduct online preparatory classes every year. Instead, the government should firstly create an environment where the passed students can stay in the country. For that, which aspects should be improved, the government should make a timely plan. Today's students need to emphasize hard work, patriotism, ethics, and honesty.
In order to really improve education, first of all, the government should create a positive environment for teachers. "Teacher Code of Conduct" is coming, let's not delay in making "Educational Code of Conduct" as well. If there is any derelict teacher, he/she should also be released from service. In any school, only teachers who have passed the Teachers Service Commission should be given the opportunity to serve. No one should be limited to their unique talents and opportunities by trapping them in temporary or contract names. Increasing the morale of teachers is more important than increasing salary facilities.
Although some local level teachers are working dutifully, they are always in a state of fear due to party influence. Others will learn from the good work done by one. The educational model work done by some local levels, the practice of model schools should also be practiced by other local governments and schools. If this is the case, if there are any wrong practices, they will also be forced to improve.
