Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has made a controversial comment from Lumbini on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti, 'The war between India and Pakistan has stopped after we asked for restraint.'
Shouldn't every word spoken by the Chief Executive of Nepal be true, responsible and evidence-based? Making such a claim without a deep understanding of Nepal's diplomatic status, geo-political position and international balance is not only ridiculous, but also an act against Nepal's diplomatic credibility.
The country today is mired in political instability, unemployment, corruption and misrule. People are struggling to live their daily lives. In today's context where education, health, employment, cheap market and good governance have become the first priority, the people want to hear the prime minister stand on the real ground and not a speech filled with jokes, anecdotes and gossip. Saying that 'the war stopped after we asked for restraint' is nothing more than a childish attempt to gain cheap popularity.
People are no longer in a position to fall under the spell of speech. They question, criticize, argue and demand results. Every word spoken by a person holding a position of responsibility like the Prime Minister has an impact inside and outside the country. Therefore, now is the time to think before speaking, to examine things in the light of logic and to make claims only on the basis of evidence.
