The history of Nepal is a story of many struggles, changes and movements. The contribution of some kings in this cannot be denied.
In particular, Prithvi Narayan Shah built the foundation of modern Nepal by unifying Nepal. King Tribhuvan made a historic decision to end the Rana rule in 2007 and helped plant the seeds of democracy. Such contributions are historically commendable. However, based on this history, is it appropriate to discuss the restoration of the monarchy again today?
The people's movement of 2062/063 has made it clear that the monarchy can no longer be the guiding governance system of Nepal. During his rule, Gyanendra Shah curtailed the rights of the people, curbed the freedom of the press and tried to limit power around himself by suspending the democratic constitution. At that time, the Nepali people suffered autocracy and ended it by protesting. It is foolish to try to throw the republic, which came from such great sacrifices and sacrifices of the people, into the abyss of history now.
Similarly, today's political scenario also has some interesting aspects. The contribution of historical parties like UML and Congress should not be forgotten, which played a deep role for the people in the past. It is also true that both parties are weakening their moral ground. However, the contribution of Pushpalal Shrestha, BP Koirala, Madan Bhandari, Ganeshman Singh and Manmohan Adhikari in Nepali society should not be forgotten. Bhandari's multi-party democracy of the people tried to find a balance between democracy and socialism. Manmohan Adhikari gave an example of a true socialist leader running the government in favor of the poor, workers and farmers.
However, KP Sharma Oli, who is leading the same party today, has been increasing the importance of individuals over the ideas of the party. Sectarianism, egoism and individualistic power-centered politics have dominated within the UML. Leaders like Oli have tried to gain popularity in the name of 'nationalism', but in practice he has neither been able to win the trust of the people nor preserve the ideals of the party.
Therefore, now our responsibility is clear - we must remember the contribution of history, but we must not accept the mistakes of the present under the guise of the past. Whether it is in the name of monarchy or historical parties, we must use consciousness and conscience to stand up for democracy and people's rights. Nepal wants an accountable democracy, not a monarchy again.
