Marriage in Nepal is traditionally considered as a relationship between two families. Earlier generations saw marriage as a social and family responsibility rather than a personal one. But now Nepali youth have started to change that thinking.

The number of love marriages is increasing in the society, the definition of marriage is also changing. In earlier days, marriage in Nepali society was mostly decided by the parents.

The society has begun to accept love marriage more than before, but still in some places things like caste, religion, and family prestige are creating barriers.

Magi marriage is also not as strict as before. Earlier, it was compulsory to marry according to the choice of the family, but now boys and girls are allowed to decide only after getting to know each other.

In urban areas, young people who are busy making careers are not in a hurry to get married. Even though there is pressure from family and society to get married, many people now have started thinking that 'I will marry only when I feel good about myself'.
Although the traditional thinking still persists in the society, the attitude of the youth towards marriage has changed to a great extent. Earlier, the thought that 'marriage is an essential part of life' is gradually diminishing. Nowadays, there is a growing tendency to give importance to love, to prioritize understanding and to consider marriage as a personal choice. This change indicates that the nature of marital relationship in Nepali society is leading to a new mode.
