When the monarchy was abolished and the republic was established in Nepal, the people hoped for a political system that would be inclusive, responsive and provide equal opportunities. However, those who have reached power and power are doing the opposite of the people's expectations.
Recently, the government is preparing to enact a law that will give special benefits for life to people who hold high positions such as former president, former prime minister, and former speaker. This move risks further discrediting the republic.
In a developing country like Nepal, where citizens are struggling for basic health services, education and employment, the decision to give life-long benefits to some limited people is unjust.
The tax paid by the people should be spent on the necessary areas such as the prosperity of the country, poverty alleviation, health improvement, infrastructure development, and not for the luxurious life of former officials.
The essence of democracy is that people's representatives are servants of the people, not masters. However, the leaders who have gained power are trying to establish themselves as a special class. In a republic, office is only an opportunity given for a fixed period of time, the official should be like a citizen after serving. If they are to be given special facilities for life, it will be against the spirit of democracy.
When people have to live on low wages, are forced to go to work abroad, it is difficult to get basic facilities, some former officials of the same country enjoying lifelong benefits from the state fund is not only injustice, but also a step to increase social inequality. Such laws increase the greed of those in power, which leads to a loss of fairness in policy-making and the rise of corruption.
If any of the ex-officers are truly financially indigent, limited assistance may be given after assessing their situation. However, facilities like monthly allowance, government housing, vehicles, security personnel are just an unnecessary burden on the state coffers.
A republic is the rule of the people. It should not become a means of favoring any particular class. If the government goes ahead with this proposal, it will only create frustration and anger among the people. The government has a warning - don't do anything to defame the republic, otherwise the people will reckon.
