Amrita Anmol's article published in Kantipur on January 7, entitled 'Khoi Dandaharhit Vidyalaya?', raises serious questions about our current educational system.
Although the practice of corporal punishment in schools is old, its negative effects are now clearly visible. The practice of punishing students not only causes physical pain but also mental pain. This lowers their self-esteem, negatively affecting learning. Punishment-free schools prioritize students' physical and mental health by placing them in a positive environment. It makes the student more open, calm and creative. Instills guidance, understanding, and empathy for students to demonstrate good behavior and performance rather than punishment. This helps in their overall development. The
system of punishment gives students less of an education of wrongdoing and more of a sense of fear, which can adversely affect their social and mental development in the future. Instead, encouraging the student through positive feedback and encouragement is extremely important. It gives students an opportunity to improve themselves and make themselves independent. The purpose of school is not just to complete the curriculum, but to teach the students the values and morals necessary to become good human beings. If we create a non-punitive environment, it gives students confidence and self-esteem instead of fear. Makes them stronger mentally, physically and socially. In this way, we can prepare competent and dedicated citizens of the future through penal-free schools.
