The news that two liters of petrol were distributed to participants in the general meeting held in Sakhuwaprasauni Rural Municipality of Parsa has exposed the pathetic condition of Nepalese politics and society.
The event in which petrol coupons were distributed to activists for the program in the presence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has raised serious questions about our social consciousness and political culture.
If such an exercise shows the failed leadership of the leaders, it makes clear how much the awareness level of the people has fallen. This incident has once again confirmed the saying that people should improve before leaders. The trend of selling the soul for the greed of two liters of petrol, praising the speech and clapping the throat dry shows how weak our society is. When the people are ready to sell themselves so cheaply, then the leaders make the dignity of the society even cheaper to serve their own interests.
Two liters of petrol is just one example. Such tendency to sell for cheap self-interest has weakened the political position of the country. When people lose their sense of dignity, it is easy for leaders to abuse their power and resources. The weakness of the people legitimizes the wrong practices of the leaders. Widespread rigging of elections, cheap selling of voters and voting under influence have deprived the country of proper leadership. When people are sold on cheap greed, they cannot elect the right leadership. As a result, the country's politics remain unstable and corrupt. Such a tendency will never allow the country to be freed from slavery.
