Today, Germany presents a unique example of honoring its past. A controversial figure like Adolf Hitler led the worst genocide and war in human history during World War II.
However, even now in Germany, his statues and monuments are respectfully kept as a means of remembering the lessons of history. This is an example of building a nation by taking lessons from history and not just by reviling it. In Nepal too, there is a need to look at the personality and contribution of King Mahendra from a similar objective point of view.
When King Mahendra took over the leadership of Nepal in 2011, the country was in an unstable political situation. Democratic practice was weak and Nepal's sovereignty was under threat due to India's growing influence. In such a challenging situation, Mahendra led by keeping national self-respect and integrity at the center. On December 1, 2017, he established the Panchayati system. This move made his reign one of the most controversial. Supporters consider it a bold decision taken for national integrity. According to them, instability in the multi-party system and foreign interference put the country at risk of disintegration. However, critics have interpreted this as an end to democracy and a violation of civil liberties. During his reign, the blueprint for modern development in Nepal was prepared. Mahendra initiated projects like Mahendra Highway, Kodari Marg and Hetaunda Industrial Area. He improved education and culture by establishing Tribhuvan University, Pragya Academy and modern stadium. All these actions played an important role in making Nepal a self-sufficient and strong nation.
Another major achievement during Mahendra's reign was the removal of India's checkposts. India's 18 check posts in the north posed a challenge to national sovereignty. By removing them, he protected Nepal's territory and political independence. This step helped to build Nepal as an independent and strong nation. However, the autocracy seen in the panchayat system also gave rise to criticism. The voice of the people was stifled by banning political parties. Lack of democracy and human rights made his rule unpopular. These moves have long been at the center of criticism. Even though Nepal started its journey towards democracy and republic after 2047, even today, the country has not made the expected progress due to political instability, corruption and party interests. In such a situation, the discussion of King Mahendra's leadership ability cannot be considered unnatural. His foresight and steadfast leadership are still remembered today.
Mahendra's contribution cannot be denied. He protected the sovereignty and integrity of the country and built the foundation of modern development. However, some incidents of violation of democracy and suppression of civil rights made his rule controversial. Nation building is possible only by learning from history, not by reviling it. We need to learn from Mahendra's contribution and his mistakes and move forward. Respecting history is not only remembering the past, but learning from it and paving the way for the future. The lessons given to Nepal by King Mahendra's patriotism and foresight are still important today.
