Therefore, the state is not needed

Somat Ghimire's article published in Kantipur on Thursday agreed with some of the points of ``This is why we need the state'', but we could not agree on many points. There is no scientific basis in his argument that 'if there is no province, colonialism will spread further'. It's just a clever trick to make the common people seditious and revolted.

Federalism in itself is not bad, nor is it a magic wand. Everyone knows that federalism in Nepal was imposed from above, not from the ground. Not only that, even though it is said that federalism was brought in Nepal for the upliftment of areas that have been neglected by the state for a long time, it is not so in reality.

This is confirmed by two examples - during the Panchayat period, the geographical area which was named as 'Sudor Pashchim Zone Development Zone', even after some development infrastructures including roads were built, naming the region as 'Sudor Pashchim Province' by federalism always pushed that area away from the center and the people there always said that 'we are from far away'. It is the result of diffuse thinking. Another, deliberate injustice done to Karnali region.

In Lumbini province, keeping not only Bhairahawa, Lumbini but also Nepalgunj but not allowing Karnali, which is behind in development and exit, to connect with Terai should be considered a conspiracy under the guise of federalism. Looking at geography and economy, Nepalgunj should have been in Karnali province. But because of the vested interests of some influential leaders rather than logic and conscience, all these wrong things are happening.

Another example is the ongoing dispute over the name of Koshi region. Looking at the practice of federalism so far, it has been confirmed that the state parliament and state government are not necessary. Instead, it will be more effective if the concept of 'Province Development Council' is implemented in which the central and local people's representatives from across the province will be ex-officio members and therefore plan and implement the plan of the province. We need good governance, development and socio-economic exit, we don't need a federalism where the lions will give and eat.
