Expectations of good governance to be realized

The recent public attraction and trust shown in the leadership of Balendra Shah (Balen) is actually an expression of the public's frustration with the traditional political style and their expectations for a new style of leadership.

The basis of good governance is transparency and accountability. Only when the irregularities, corruption and hypocrisy hidden within various state bodies are exposed through a strict legal process, then citizens begin to trust justice and governance.

Nepal's democratic journey is not the result of any simple political change, it is a historical achievement of long-term people's struggle, sacrifice and sacrifice. Against this backdrop, the current political structure should keep the hopes, aspirations and expectations of the people at the center.

Especially, the trust placed by the people in the alternative leadership that has emerged recently has given a clear message - the people no longer want speeches, but results, not assurances, but experiences. In this context, 'good governance that the people can feel' has become the most important political agenda of the present.

When a citizen receives hassle-free service from a government office, when the mechanism for listening to and resolving his complaints is activated, when the state bodies work impartially, only then does he feel that there is a government. Unfortunately, this feeling has been lacking in Nepal for a long time. The public's attraction and trust towards the leadership of Balendra Shah (Balen) in recent times is actually an expression of the people's disappointment with the traditional political style and their expectations for a new style of leadership. Good governance is possible with the working style shown by Balen, firmness in decision-making and commitment to administrative reform. But the biggest challenge now is to transform this hope into long-term institutional achievement.

Good governance does not mean only the absence of corruption, it also includes transparency, accountability, effective service delivery and fair treatment. When a citizen receives hassle-free service from a government office, when the mechanism for listening to and resolving his complaints is activated, when the state bodies work impartially, only then does he feel that there is a government. Unfortunately, this feeling has been lacking in Nepal for a long time.

To change this situation, the current leadership must bring about a change in behavior more than policy commitments. It is essential to reduce the gap between publicly expressed ideas and behavior.

A serious problem seen in Nepal is the tendency to make extensive changes in administrative leadership with the change of government. This weakens institutional stability and weakens the morale of honest and efficient employees. If an administrator is working honestly, transparently and in a result-oriented manner, regardless of the government in which he was appointed, then continuing him is a basic condition of good governance. Protecting the competent and removing the incompetent is the hallmark of balanced and responsible governance.

Good governance is possible in Nepal if the right person is given the right environment. Therefore, the Balen-led government should adopt a policy of encouraging honest and courageous people. If steps are taken such as not interfering unnecessarily in their work, providing necessary resources and ensuring security, significant improvements can be made in corruption control.

Another important dimension of good governance is the use of technology. Service delivery can be made transparent and accountable through digital systems. Online services, automated processes and data-based decision-making systems reduce the chances of corruption and improve the quality of services.

Public awareness and shared responsibility

Establishing good governance is not possible through the government's sole efforts. For this, effective dissemination of public awareness messages is essential in parallel. The feeling of good governance cannot be sustainable unless the citizens are self-aware, responsible and dutiful.

Now is the time for every citizen to clearly understand their role. Rising above the tendency to blame all the weaknesses of the state only on the government, every aspect of society - citizens, private sector, media and political leadership - must move forward with self-reflection.

To accelerate good governance, it is indispensable to prioritize professional independence, respect for qualifications and institutional stability. Learning from the wrong practices and weak activities of the past, we all need to make a common resolve to build a new Nepal with honesty, discipline and positive thinking. Only when both the government and citizens fulfill their respective responsibilities with integrity, can good governance become a reality in practice, not on paper.

Public participation is an important foundation of good governance. Ensuring citizen participation in the policy-making and implementation process increases trust in the government. Work such as making the grievance management system effective, regularizing public hearings and increasing direct dialogue with citizens brings the government closer to the people.

Policy stability and professional respect

Just as a business conducts detailed studies, research and planning before launching a new product or service, in the same way, in the operation of the state, in-depth decisions need to be made based on evaluation and long-term thinking. It is not enough to have a strong or powerful government; how it is used is crucial.

If the tendency to remove, force resignation or interfere with capable, honest and result-oriented people who are working solely on the basis of political reasons or interests increases, it blocks the path to good governance. Moreover, if people affiliated with the ruling party try to run institutions according to their own interests, institutional trust weakens and a negative message is sent among the people.

Therefore, it is indispensable to prioritize professional independence, respect for qualifications and institutional stability to accelerate good governance.

Ultimately, good governance is not a goal that can be achieved in a single day, it is a process of continuous improvement and commitment. However, it must begin with a clear vision, strong will and practical steps. In today's context, if the energy and commitment shown by the Balen leadership can be institutionalized, a new chapter of good governance can begin in Nepal.

Therefore, it is the Balen government's primary responsibility to establish good governance by improving service delivery in a way that is directly felt by the people, protecting and encouraging honest and courageous individuals, and putting transparency and accountability into practice. If this responsibility can be fulfilled effectively, it will not only make the current government successful, but will also bring about long-term and positive changes in the overall political culture.
