The importance of every vote

What you should know

Generally, a vote is a person's opinion or expression. But in the context of an election, a vote is an official commitment by the people to trust their representatives and allow them to represent them. In a democratic country, voting is a fundamental right of citizens and also a very powerful tool to choose the government.

Abraham Lincoln has defined democracy as ‘government of the people, for the people, by the people’. That is, in a democratic system of governance, there is direct participation of the people in the governance of the country, which is accepted by the Constitution of Nepal, which has provided that sovereignty is vested in the people. In the system of governance of Nepal, which has adopted democratic values, the vote of the voters plays a direct role in the selection of the government.

The country is currently in the midst of elections. Political parties are actively engaged in election-focused activities including unity, reunion, and generational change. On the other hand, there is also despair that no matter which government comes, our situation will not improve.

Voters should vote based on their political beliefs, trust or hope they see in the candidate and send that candidate to parliament. Nepal has adopted a parliamentary system of governance, where members of parliament elected by the people make laws and also form the government. In addition, there are two types of elections for the House of Representatives in Nepal – direct and proportional election systems. In the direct election system, there is direct competition between candidates from different political parties or other independent candidates from each constituency, of which the candidate who receives the most votes wins. In the proportional electoral system, the entire country is considered as one constituency and votes are given to the parties participating in the election, out of which the Election Commission publishes the list of proportional parliaments based on the votes received by the party from the candidates sent on the closed list by the party that crosses the 'threshold' of 3 percent of the total votes cast.

In elections, everyone votes by evaluating their faith, trust or the ability of their representative. However, due to the corruption, irregularities and unrest in the country at present, there is extreme disappointment among the people, due to which some have developed the mentality of not voting in elections. However, a responsible citizen should not view voting as just a right but as a responsibility to choose good and efficient leadership. Because, with one vote of the voter, a right person can reach the right position. With one vote, a qualified, capable and person who values their vote can win the election. If one does not vote, a qualified person can be defeated by a margin of one vote.

Plato has compared this to the example of choosing a captain of a large ship in his book ‘The Republic’. In a democracy, the person who is more eloquent than the qualified or who can easily influence others wins. However, Plato has criticized democracy by saying that if a person who is more ‘popular’ than the qualified wins the election, the ship can sink. Of course, in a democratic election, the person who can win the people in his favor wins. Therefore, even an incompetent person who can win the people in his favor has a chance of winning, but only if the voters think that they should vote for the good, not us. If a decision is made not to vote for the strong, capable and qualified person who has emerged in their area, a qualified candidate may have to lose.

Similarly, in the proportional electoral system, each vote is equally important. The proportional system provides an opportunity for the backward classes to be represented in the House of Representatives according to the principle of inclusiveness. Therefore, voting for the right political party in the proportional system helps in representing the right class. This gives justice to the principles of inclusiveness and social justice.

Voters should vote based on their political beliefs, trust, or hopes they see in a candidate and send that candidate to the parliament. The MP represents the voters and raises their voice in the parliament, draws the government's attention to the issues of the voters, and makes the government responsible and accountable to the parliament and the people when it goes astray. We have experienced different types of governance in a short time. However, the reason why the situation of Nepal and Nepalis has not changed is not the system. It is because the right person cannot or does not reach that system. Therefore, by sending the right person to the right place, the country can change, which requires not a movement or massacre, but one vote each, which is possible through this election.

Looking at both electoral systems, even one vote of the voter can make a big change in the governance system of Nepal. If the right political party and the right candidate are voted for, the voice of the voters can be raised in the parliament and drawn to the attention of the government, as well as directly affecting the formation of a good government. This is the right path to bring the revolution of 23 and 24 Bhadau to a conclusion. Therefore, everyone should make good use of their valuable votes.
