In Nepal, the age group of 16 to 40 years is considered as youth in Nepal. The population of this age group is around 40 percent in Nepal. This is not only a very big energetic power for Nepal but also a power that has the ability to face challenges and change the status quo.
That is why Mao, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, addressed the youth and students and said, "This world is yours, it is also ours". But in the final analysis yours . .... Our hope is on you.' This means that not only the people, but also the leadership sees the future of the country in the eyes of the youth. The basis of the progress of the country basically depends on the dynamism, dedication and contribution of the youth.
Youth has a very big role and contribution in most of the political changes in Nepal. At the age of 33, the 'All India Nepali National Congress' was established in India under the activism of BP Koirala. BP, who was involved in India's freedom movement since his student days, started an organized movement to end the autocratic Rana regime. Similarly, when the Nepal Communist Party was founded in 2006, Pushpalal Shrestha was only 25 years old. It seems that the leadership of all the political parties active in the movement of political change in Nepal has dedicated the fertile and important young age of life to political transformation. However, the main leadership of all political parties are not ready to establish youth as leaders and hand over the leadership of the changing times . On the other hand, the youth leadership has not been able to come up with a clear vision, strategy and plan to solve the current national crisis, challenges and problems.
role of youth
It is said that young people are creative, dynamic, critical and resistant. Naturally, young people are consciously looking at the life they are living, the present and the possible future scenario. The young generation wants to move forward with the speed of science, technology, economy and human development happening in the world . If there is no political environment to address those hopes, expectations and needs of the youth, frustration, anger and dissatisfaction will increase among the youth. This is what is happening in Nepal now. However, the political environment is not going to be created by itself as the youth wants, so the youth should make a strong political intervention in terms of theory, ideology and policy. For this, youth should not only join politics strongly, but should be ready to take leadership with ideas and plans.
The role of youth in building and transforming the political system is strengthened. The role of youth power was very important in establishing the republic in Nepal. When the question about the republic started to arise, the youth/student people are strongly rising against such regression when the monarchy, which has been brought to Aryaghat, tries to raise its head . Not only this, they are also angry that the political leadership did not play a responsible role in institutionalizing republic, federalism, inclusiveness and secularism. Naturally, criticism of the political leadership's actions is a natural necessity. In addition, the youth should lead the development of the republic, advanced democracy and socialist system. The political leadership that is taking full advantage of the power does not want radical change as the youth wants, so the young generation must intervene politically.
Nepal is on a journey of serious economic crisis. Young people who can labor, sweat and contribute to the country are forced to work for cheap foreign roles . Forced to sell labor from the Gulf to Africa . Some of the young people have fallen into the trap of human traffickers and had to be sold. The state is not responsible for solving the pains, problems and concerns of the youth who send remittances that keep the country's economy running . Instead, he is engrossed in collecting money from the visit visa by becoming a middleman . Neither the state nor the parties have the method to sustain youth power in the country. So much so that even the political youth organization does not have the identification of the basic problems of the youth, the solution approach, idea and strategy. Therefore, a strong role of youth in politics is necessary to analyze such a situation and bring politics to the right path.
The comment that 'politics is a dirty game' is strongly established in Nepal. Human society is the product of politics, so politics itself is not a dirty game. If it is not possible to run the state without politics, it is also not possible for the people to enjoy their rights . Therefore, politics is an inevitable necessity of human life, so people should be interested in politics. Since every step of our life is affected by politics, it is impossible for youth to be free from politics. Nepal's political party, leadership and trends are bad, unsustainable. Chakadi, flattery, bribery, and brokering have become synonymous with political power and resource acquisition. The country itself does not escape from such unfounded politics . Therefore, the responsibility of transformation of bad politics has come to conscious, strong and dynamic youth. For the happy future of the youth and the next generation, we must fight strongly against such political injustice. This challenge cannot be solved by being isolated from youth politics.
challenge is called
, there is no youth who cannot face the challenge, that is, the youth is the power to accept the challenge, face it and stand firmly in favor of progressive transformation . Therefore, students and youth organizations have an immense contribution in all political transformation movements. As a result of those struggles, the system was changed, but neither the issues of the youth were addressed nor the socio-economic transformation took a reasonable pace . There are many reasons behind this, some of which are discussed here .
In 2022, Aneraswaviyu, a student organization close to the then Communist Party, was established, and in 2027, Nepal Vidyarthi Sangh was formed under the Nepali Congress. The main objective of such student organizations was to end the Panchayat system politically and to ensure quality educational rights of the students. Politically, Nepal has been transformed into a republic, but educationally, all the problems remain. The education sector is classist, uninclusive, impractical, highly commercialized and full of many ills . No political student organization has a clear idea, vision, plan and strategy for the transformation of such a chaotic educational situation . The national conference of such student organizations has become limited only to getting positions. Similarly, Nepal Tarun Dal was established in 2010 and the National Youth Union was formed in 2047. Likewise, Young Communist League (YCL) was established in 2063 after the Maoist came to the peace process. It is natural that these organizations carry Mauparty's views, but it is also their responsibility to address the problems of the youth as a whole. However, these organizations have not been able to submit a clear conceptual approach and roadmap to solve common problems of youth or students. They have not been able to make the state and the party accountable. It is the responsibility of the youth to analyze the current socio-political environment, identify the problems and present a solution plan. However, these organizations are turning away from such serious questions. The result of this is that the recently concluded conference of Yuva Sangh and YCL did not present any concrete ideas, approaches and strategies to solve national problems and address the concerns of the youth.
Theoretically, leadership is seen as a conduit of ideas . However, looking at the practice of student and youth organizations, it is clear that the main goal of leadership is to gain power. Just as in a political party, the splendor of power is demonstrated by establishing dominance in the party power, this is clearly reflected in the youth and student organizations. No change in the lives of the common youth and students will be achieved by any means to reach power, not through ideas, visions and programs. Such a practice does not help to solve the national political crisis, nor does it add any bricks to solving the problems of youth and students.
A critical mind and approach are indispensable qualities in young politicians . Critical consciousness is the power and identity of youth. Practically, the construction of this consciousness, practical practice and transformation are not being done sufficiently. Ideologically, the parties have spilled over. Practically most of the party leadership is loyal to interest groups, middlemen and brokers rather than the people. Party leadership and cadres are involved in anarchy, disorder, corruption, irregularity . The party's leadership is involved in the country's major corruption and smuggling scandals. However, it is forbidden to raise such questions in the party. The youth leadership is forced to spend time and energy in defending the leadership involved in such serious crimes and misbehavior. That is why the youth and students do not resist the scandal of corruption and injustice in the country. Leaders want to enslave the youth/students, the resistant youth remain silent due to patronizing political connections . The youth should be able to challenge the extreme anarchy, corruption, despotism and slavish power-relationships seen in thoughts, attitudes and behavior . The political future is determined by the people, so the youth leadership who stands firmly on the side of the people is the need of the moment .
The most terrible problem seen in Nepali politics is autocracy in leadership. The youth must protect the leader's arrogance, anti-people actions and dishonesty. The youth leadership does not have the ability to review the role of the leadership that has repeatedly failed after coming to power. The political leadership that is playing with the future of the people cannot dare to stand up . If the youth and student organizations cannot resist against such apolitical practices, what can be expected from the youth leadership in the future? Therefore, it is necessary for students and youth organizations and leadership to seriously review their role. Not only that, we should be able to make political interventions by creating ideas, approaches and strategies to find a solution to the national political, economic and social crisis.
Tomorrow's political leadership is today's youth. When this leadership deteriorates, the country will be pushed towards crisis. Therefore, youth leadership must be honest, accountable and people-oriented. Guiding the national politics, creating the necessary ideas, approaches and strategies for the overall economic-political transformation, the youth and the next generation as well as the country's progress and advancement must be consciously contributed by the youth. The youth does not accept despotism, slavery and backwardness. Clear in thought and approach, responsible and accountable youth leadership is the need of today .
