The role of blood donors has been very incomparable in making the contribution of science to be properly implemented and the life saving campaign a complete success. A kind of competition has started to be seen among the volunteers, who are full of service, until today, who donates blood the most times in the world.

In fact, the world's voluntary blood donors are not just a thank you, but an anthropomorphic God.

The history of blood transfusion services in the world is almost 400 years old. In 1628 Dr. James Blundell (UK) made the first attempt to administer human blood to a dying patient. In 1900 Dr. Karl Landsteiner (Austria) discovered that there are A, B and O blood groups. In 1914 Dr. Hustin discovered a way to keep blood in bottles outside the body without clotting using the chemical sodium citrate. In 1932, the first blood transfusion center was opened in Leningrad Hospital.

Looking back at the history of blood transfusion in Nepal, in the year 2000, as a volunteer, the founding president of the charity organization and the icon of the service. Dayavir Kansakar first donated blood to Ratnakaji Tuladhar who was dying. This is the first gold marked blood donation in the history of Nepal. Similarly, Nepal's first female blood donor, Sister Taradevi Tuladhar, donated blood to a kidney patient for the first time in 2018.

In Nepal, blood transfusion service was established and operated by Nepal Red Cross Society in a small house near Veer Hospital under the name of Lakshmi Blood Bank from 2023 July 12. Initially, only 157 units of blood were collected and provided in Kathmandu.

Since 2004, Dr. who discovered A, B and O blood group, thanking all the blood donors and supporters of the campaign worldwide. World Blood Donor Day is being celebrated on June 14 on the occasion of Karl Landsteiner's birthday. In 2025, the World Health Organization has put forward the slogan "Let's donate blood, raise hope, save millions of lives" in its application.

This time, it is necessary to make this slogan more effective, so it is announced that World Blood Donor Day will be celebrated every year around the world to encourage blood donation by spreading the indispensability and importance of blood around the world with the recognition that if safe blood can be provided in a simple way in time, it can save lives.

Nepal Red Cross Society has been operating blood transfusion services in Nepal since its inception. Currently, the National Blood Policy 2070 in Nepal has established the National Blood Transfusion Bureau under the National Blood Transfusion Program under the National Blood Transfusion Program under the Ministry of Health as a regulatory body. Which is welcome.

because through this bureau in the national blood program this bureau effectively sees and the participation of the state is seen. But so far this bureau has not been seen as effective. The purpose for which it has been established should be fulfilled, and not a bureau like any other government agency should become a place of employment for some employees like a government office.

Blood shortage is seen as a big problem in the country. However, solving this problem is very easy. Lack of coordination between the relevant stakeholders, lack of national blood action plan are its particular problems. It can be permanently resolved if the stakeholders fulfill their responsibilities. For example, if there is a coordinated organization action plan among the stakeholders, the Nepal government and the Nepal Red Cross Society fulfill their responsibilities and conduct blood donation as a public awareness and motivational activity, there will never be a shortage of blood in the country.

It has been 59 years since the establishment of blood transfusion services in Nepal. Currently Blood Transfusion Service is going to celebrate its Golden Jubilee. Remembering the important contribution of voluntary blood donors who are the main stakeholders of the National Blood Program with blood donation, Association Blodan, working as a representative organization of blood donors and blood donating organizations, has been honoring blood donors and organizations who have made special contributions in the field of blood donation in Nepal. The first blood donor this year. The first National Blood Donor Day is celebrated on February 22, the day of the establishment of Blodan, dedicated to Dayavir Singh Kansakar.

Not all goals are successful but every step towards the goal must be correct. For that, it is necessary to have positive thinking, creative ideas and generosity in vision.
