Multifaceted benefits of health equipment maintenance

Most patients who reach government hospitals have to run to private labs for tests recommended by doctors. Some treatments or operations do not. Government hospitals suggest to go elsewhere because their equipment is broken. This adds stress and financial burden to the patient, resulting in lost revenue for the hospital itself. Such a problem for years has now become the basis for mitigation.

After the National Innovation Center repaired the damaged equipment in 10 federal hospitals, many services that were interrupted there have resumed operation. From this, it has become a basis for getting benefits from the hospital to the patient. This is a positive start to repairing broken equipment. It needs to be made nationwide.

Minister of Health Pradeep Paudel and Chairman of Innovation Center Mahavir Pun signed an agreement for maintenance and management of equipment of 17 federal hospitals last August. After the agreement, the team of biomedical engineers of the center conducted a detailed examination/test of 660 equipment stored in the warehouse of the hospital and prepared a report.

The center has repaired 484 devices that were stuck. In this way, the equipment worth about 243 million has started to be used after repair. In this process, ventilators, dialysis machines, anesthesia machines, video x-ray auto clave machines, blood pressure monitors, ECG machines, and patient monitors have been repaired. 176 equipments are yet to be repaired as they need spare parts.

When the stopped machines come back into operation, the services provided by the respective hospitals become more comprehensive. It contributes to increasing the reputation and income of the hospital. As the hospital becomes financially strong, it becomes the basis for increasing the medical and physical facilities that the patients get. In such a situation, an environment of healthy competition is created in the quality of service. On the other hand, patients can also get more services in one package. Being a government hospital, their financial cost is also low.

There is also a tendency in many hospitals to introduce new health equipment for the sake of commission. Even though there is no base of operation, some people buy equipment, take commission on it and keep the equipment. Another type is found to be not interested in repairing and operating equipment that has been damaged in a normal way, instead, they take the initiative to buy new equipment out of the greed of commission.

Inventive Kendra found that during the maintenance, even the wires cut by rats were left hanging without connecting the equipment, which exposes the irresponsible and cheating attitude of the Asphalt officials. Both the mentioned trends are ultimately draining the state coffers. But after the repair and operation of the stalled equipment, one part of the commission is sure to be blocked. This will ultimately save the nation's treasury. At the same time, there is an opportunity to benefit from spending on unnecessary work in other creative activities.

The initiative and commitment of the National Innovation Center is also commendable. The center itself is a matter of public information running with limited resources and means. He also lacks manpower. He has faced a shortage of biomedical engineers even for the maintenance of health equipment. However, he has been manufacturing equipment in various fields. The old machinery of the agricultural implement factory at Birgunj, which has been closed for two decades, has become productive after the repairs carried out by the Centre. Similarly, the center has also been repairing damaged machines by entering into separate agreements with various hospitals. Center's efforts need to be encouraged.

As health equipment is repaired now, if the equipment and materials in other areas can be repaired and re-operated, public expenses can be reduced. The innovation center develops its own skills. Skills are passed on to new generations. Such skills and abilities can be used in infrastructure construction and development projects. Which not only creates employment, but also increases national confidence.

Therefore, the repair of health equipment by the National Innovation Center has not only helped patients reach the hospital, but also built a foundation for national confidence. To make it more comprehensive, from the government to everyone who is interested and attached to innovation, continuous initiatives should be taken.
