Importance of broadcasters and producers in sports

If there's one topic that consumes the most time on television right now, it's sports. Apart from sports, there is no other program where the viewer's natural interest remains. Because sport has become a medium that produces widely publicized and inevitable results and creates a large audience.

This was not always the case, and was not until the Berlin Olympics in 1936. Games held in Berlin were broadcast live on black-and-white television in the Athletes' Village and in 25 special rooms located in Berlin and Potsdam. It was the first time in the world that a sporting event was seen live on a television screen. And, it opened new doors of possibilities. The 1960 Olympics held in Rome, Italy were broadcast live across Europe.

While the 1964 Tokyo Olympics became the first tournament to reach a global audience. Nepal has also started participating in the Olympics since 1964. Until now, all live broadcasts were in black and white. However, when the next edition was held in Mexico City 4 years after the Tokyo Olympics, the games were televised live in color.

America also has a history of live sports broadcasting only 80 years ago. On May 17, 1939, National Broadcasting Company (NBC) televised the first live college baseball game between the Columbia Lions and the Princeton Tigers at Baker Field in New York.

In India in December 1966, when the West Indies toured India, the match against the Prime Minister's XI was telecast live by Doordarshan TV. Before that game, people followed cricket only by listening to live commentary on the radio.

Nepal Television started in 2041 in Nepal. 3 years after that, in 2044, there is a record of live broadcasting of NTV Cup volleyball tournament. The 1986 World Cup was watched by Nepalese viewers from Nepal Television. The opening and closing ceremonies of the 8th South Asian Games held in Nepal in 1999 were also broadcast live on Nepal Television. However, the matches were not telecasted live.

Globally, the sports broadcasting industry is growing rapidly. Even as concerns are being expressed about the future of the television industry in Nepal, sports broadcasters around the world are being welcomed by the unprecedented potential to expand their market. Major events like FIFA World Cup, Olympics, all formats of cricket, American soccer, rugby, volleyball are watched by billions of people. Players of those games become overnight celebrities.

For example, the 2022 FIFA World Cup final attracted an estimated one and a half billion viewers. This further proves the power and potential of modern broadcasting. With HD visuals, multiple camera angles, instant replays, and engaging commentary, broadcasters create an atmosphere that is many times grander than the competition's competition.

Pre- and post-match analyses, player interviews and storytelling around players' journeys transport the viewer to emotional depth. Which draws sports fans around the television and commercial houses realize the need to show advertisements at the same time.

Furthermore, the recent introduction and use of artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing sports broadcasting. AI powered cameras can automatically track balls and players. It also enhances the imagination of the visual medium. Makes massive cuts in human resource usage.

Real-time analytics, powered by machine learning, can instantly deliver essential insights such as player speed, shot trajectories and game statistics, so it keeps viewers on their toes. It is time to introduce this technology in Nepal. Nepali broadcasters also now need to use the latest and highest model of technology for the development of sports channels.

Moreover, AI also helps overcome the global language barrier. AI-powered translations and subtitles ensure broadcast content is accessible to a global audience.

In the case of Nepal, whenever we talk about sports, we have to explain that broadcasting and production are different. Although they look similar, their purpose and the service they provide are different. In production, the construction of materials and the stage of production are important. Such as: filming, directing and live feed editing. Broadcasting, on the other hand, focuses on delivering this content to viewers through television, radio, or digital platforms.

For example, during a cricket match, the production team manages the placement of cameras, the sequence of shots and the inclusion of graphics such as scoreboards. The broadcast team ensures that this content reaches millions of viewers through seamless transmission. Broadcast media plays a more prominent role than product in generating revenue by often integrating sponsorships and advertising.

However, when sports channels are still not fully developed in Nepal, television itself is still forced to produce and broadcast sports programs and live broadcasts. Because of that, our live sports broadcasts are not of international standard. While in the recently organized NPL, when the production organization is foreign, even in the domestic broadcasting media, when their feed is taken, the broadcast is world class.

The result of the game draws the audience to the television set because watching it live on television has a different attraction than reading it in the newspaper or listening to it on the radio. The dynamic and near presence of television has boosted the sports sector itself. According to the book published by the International Football Federation FIFA in 2004 on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, televised football strengthens relationships as a network that integrates modern society.

also helps to increase mutual relations between different societies. Television, along with sports, invisibly conveys such a sense of fraternity to the general public. At the same time, the role of sports programs broadcast on television is also great in instilling a sense of nationalism.

Overall, broadcasters are pivotal in transforming sports into global phenomena. They have also been instrumental in developing the excitement and enthusiasm of the game among the audiences around the world. From Nepal's growing sports landscape to the cutting-edge use of AI, it is imperative that broadcasters increase investment if they are to develop sports as an industry by making it more attractive and accessible.

If the magic of Nepali sports is to be delivered to every corner of the world, then the roles of sports content producers and broadcasters should be separated and each other should mix themselves with world-class technology.
