Dr. Govinda KC, an activist for medical education reform, has begun a hunger strike unto death. Holding a press conference on Thursday afternoon at the Krishna Temple dharmashala in LN Chowk, Dhangadhi, he announced his satyagraha to put pressure for his demands.
KC had given the government a deadline until the 5th of Saun to address his five-point demands. However, he stated that since the government showed no interest within the stipulated time, he was compelled to resume his hunger strike.
For this round of the hunger strike, KC arrived in Dhangadhi on Wednesday evening. His hunger strike officially began at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
In this hunger strike, KC has primarily raised the issue of political interference and conflicts of interest in appointments. He has demanded the immediate annulment of illegal and self-serving appointments made in violation of established rules at Dasharath Chand Medical University and the Medical Education Commission, as well as amendments to the controversial provisions of the Act.
Similarly, he has taken a stand that the proposal to reduce student scholarships through the Medical Education Commission and to increase seats in private colleges that do not meet standards must be immediately halted. During his satyagraha, he has demanded that medical education be made fully non-profit in line with the spirit of the National Medical Education Act, 2075, and that the written agreements made by the government in the past be implemented with sincerity.
He has also drawn the government's attention to ending the compulsion for citizens of the Far West and border areas to depend on neighboring India for health, education, and employment, and to protect national self-respect by expanding quality infrastructure and services within the country.
In addition, KC has also demanded strict action against those responsible for the heinous murders and robberies that occurred in Bhadra 2082 while standing for good governance and justice. He has also called for impartial investigations into corruption and crimes committed by politicians and officials in high positions from 2046 to the present, and for action to be taken against those found guilty.
