The shortage of chemical fertilizers seen in Koshi Province during the main season of paddy sowing is set to ease somewhat.
Seven trucks carrying 6,270 metric tons of DAP fertilizer have left for Nepal from Kolkata, said Kamal Pokharel, acting head of Agricultural Materials Company Limited Koshi. Pokharel said, 'The fertilizer will reach Nepal within three days at the most.'
He said that once the fertilizer arrives, it will be transported to the provincial branches and distributed to farmers immediately. According to him, the fertilizer most needed during paddy sowing is DAP. Urea is used only about 22 days after paddy sowing, so urea will be supplied after DAP.
This time, 20.6 percent of the total DAP imported by the government has been allocated for Koshi Province and Siraha and Saptari districts of Madhesh. Distribution will be made through branch offices and cooperatives based on the recommendation of the local fertilizer supply committee. It is estimated that about 5,500 metric tons of DAP will be required for the paddy season in Morang alone.
This year, 50,000 metric tons of chemical fertilizers are being imported from India for Nepal. Rastriya Chemical and Fertilizer Limited had won an international tender to supply 30,000 tons of urea and 20,000 tons of DAP.
