The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has directed the District Security Committee to ban night-time vehicle movement in 23 districts where there is a possibility of very heavy and heavy rainfall.

The Authority has stated that the Monsoon Response Command Post meeting on Saturday decided to stop vehicle movement in those districts at any time depending on the situation and request for high alert in other districts as well.

According to the bulletin issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, there is a possibility of very heavy rainfall in one or two places in the hilly and Terai areas of Koshi, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces today and tomorrow.

Similarly, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places in the Himalayan/hilly areas of the country, Koshi, Bagmati, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces and one or two places in the Terai areas of Madhes, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

The authority has predicted the possibility of having to respond in Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa, Sankhuwasabha, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, Khotang, Dhankuta, Sindhuli, Lalitpur, Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, Chitwan, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Kaski, Tanahun, Parbat, Baglung, Myagdi and Syangja. The meeting has directed the District Security Committees and local levels of those districts to adopt high alert.

The meeting has requested all three security agencies, local levels, volunteers and all concerned bodies to be ready for response as there is a risk of sudden floods, landslides, erosion, mudflow, and inundation in urban and Terai areas due to heavy to very heavy rains.

The Road Department and other related bodies have been requested to keep vehicles including dozers, excavators, loaders and others ready on risky highways and roads. As per the advance notice/warning, the District Security Committee, local levels, security agencies, and volunteers have been urged to relocate individuals and families living in risky areas to safer places as needed before disaster response.

The meeting has decided to request development partner organizations, civil society, the media, the private sector, and citizens to cooperate, collaborate, and share in disaster preparedness and response as needed, and to keep emergency warehouses in a state of readiness so that they can be mobilized immediately if needed.
