The printing of the driver's license (smart license), which has been pending for a long time, has been completed. The Ministry of Information and Communications has stated that it will now print and provide the new driver's license within 24 hours of receiving the details from the Department of Transport Management.

According to a press release issued by the ministry on Thursday, a total of 2.7 million smart licenses have been printed based on the details received from the department as per the two-phase agreement between the ministry, the Security Printing Center and the Department of Transport Management under the Ministry of Infrastructure Development. The ministry has stated that with this, the 'backlog' of license printing that has been going on since the past has been completely ended.

In the first phase, 1.2 million smart licenses were printed within the stipulated time as per the agreement signed on 12 Kartik 2082. Then, to manage the remaining applications, a second phase agreement was signed on 4 Baisakh 2083 and the work of printing an additional 1.5 million licenses was started. The work of that phase was also completed on 32 Asar 2083, and the printing of a total of 2.7 million smart licenses was completed, the ministry has stated.

The Ministry has stated that the Security Printing Center is currently printing smart licenses within 24 hours based on the daily information received from the Department of Transport Management of about 3 to 5 thousand service recipients who have passed the trial exam, paid revenue and renewed their licenses. This arrangement has made the new license distribution process faster and more systematic.

According to the Ministry, preparations are underway to enter into an agreement with the seven provincial governments and the relevant transport ministries to print driver's licenses. According to the Security Printing Center, preparations are underway to produce driver's licenses, citizenship cards, national identity cards, excise stickers, postage stamps and landowner certificates, and other security printing materials domestically.

Once such security printing materials are produced domestically, it will save millions of rupees going abroad and will also make a significant contribution to capital mobilization, job creation and quality public service delivery within the country.
