To make disaster-related incidents, complaints, information, and rescue services faster, easier, and more effective, the Ministry of Home Affairs has expanded the disaster hotline number 1234 to the district level and brought it into operation.
According to a press release issued by the ministry, the previously operated disaster toll-free number 1149, which was only run from the center, has been converted and the 1234 number has been brought into operation.
Under the new arrangement, calls made to 1234 from Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur districts within the Kathmandu Valley will reach the National Emergency Operations Center in Singha Durbar, while calls made from the other 74 districts will be automatically routed to the respective district’s District Emergency Operations Center.
According to the ministry, since citizens can now directly contact the emergency center of their own district for disaster-related information, problems, complaints, and suggestions, it is expected that rescue, coordination, and service delivery will become even more effective.
The meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Chaitra 13, 2082 BS, adopted a policy to make public services result-oriented, accountable, and effective by implementing governance management based on outcomes as per the governance reform agenda. In line with this policy, the Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that arrangements have been implemented to operate the emergency operations centers of all 77 districts 24 hours a day.
The ministry has urged citizens to follow official information and early warnings issued by the Government of Nepal during disasters and to contact the 1234 number if necessary.
