Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration Pratibha Rawal has said that the government has adopted a policy to resolve the problems of landless, squatters and unorganized settlements in a phased manner within 500 days.
Responding to questions raised by lawmakers on the Appropriation Bill in the National Assembly meeting on Monday, Minister Rawal pledged to address the land problem with priority by linking it to social justice. Minister Rawal said that the government is sensitive to the long-term rehabilitation of squatter families who have been evicted from various places and river banks in the Kathmandu Valley and are currently in holding centers.
She said that the government aims to return them to a regular life by providing immediate relief of Rs 25,000 per family and Rs 15,000 per month as house rent for three months. She informed that an adequate budget has been arranged for this purpose and the Land Problem Resolution Committee is taking forward the work of providing land in suitable places to families who have been confirmed as landless on the basis of citizenship. Presenting the statistics of landless Dalits, squatters and unorganized settlers, Minister Rawal said that a total of 1,247,469 applications, including 1,03,140 landless Dalits, 1,86,860 landless squatters and 954,065 unorganized settlers, are under verification so far.
