A mother and her four-year-old son were killed in a wild elephant attack in Chitwan. They belong to the minority Bote community. The thatched house they lived in also caught fire when they tried to light a fire to scare away the elephant. Locals and police brought the fire under control. The incident took place on Saturday midnight.
According to details received from the Chitwan District Police Office, a wild elephant attacked the house of Purna Bote in Belhatta, Bharatpur Metropolitan City-23. The place is under the protection of the Chitwan National Park. Chitwan District Police Office spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Chandra Bhushan Yadav said that Purna's wife, 25-year-old Ashika Bote, and her four-year-old son Bharat died in the attack. They were sleeping at home when the elephant suddenly attacked them around 11 pm. They died on the spot.
When Purna tried to light a fire to scare away the elephant, the house also caught fire. DSP Yadav said that the fire that broke out in the thatched house was extinguished by the locals and the police. He said that further investigation and efforts to control the elephants are being carried out in coordination with the Chitwan National Park regarding the incident.
