Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam has said that lawmakers should pay special attention to their behavior, language and dress to maintain the dignity and propriety of the parliament.

Speaking at a program organized at Singha Durbar on Tuesday on the occasion of the 68th Parliament Day, she emphasized that lawmakers themselves should be dignified to establish the parliament as the supreme institution of the people. She said that introspection should be conducted regarding the public complaints that the quality of the parliament has been declining in recent times. She said that in order to make parliamentary practice productive, people's issues should be kept at the center of the debate.

'There are business meetings, various other meetings. We also have informal meetings. Many issues can be resolved in those meetings, and they can be finalized through discussions between parties. But when we sit in a parliament meeting, let's discuss the people's issues. Because the state treasury is operated from the taxes paid by the people, and we are also operated from the same treasury,' she said.

Minister Gautam said that we should be dignified in everything from the language spoken in Parliament, the words we pronounce and the clothes we wear when coming to Parliament. 'If we respect Parliament, we must maintain that dignity through our own behavior. If we can do that, it will automatically confirm that Parliament is dignified and the dignity of Parliament is high,' she said. 'Therefore, my request to all honorable members is that this is the highest place for the people, the place where the representatives of the people are present. Our behavior should show the responsibility to maintain this institution as the highest institution. Let there be no weakness in our conduct. I myself will make 100 percent effort for this. This is a commitment I have made to myself.'
