FM radios in Koshi Province have started closing down in droves, a statistic has shown. In a program presented at a media conference organized by the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Koshi Province, it was stated that 44 out of 129 radios have been closed.
Mohan Kazi, former central member of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, said that 44, including 16 community radios, have been closed. He mentioned in the working paper presented at the conference that media outlets including radios have started closing down due to economic instability and lack of market.
He said that to encourage the media here, the Koshi Province government needs to arrange policies, programs and budgets for special support for media outlets operated in the mother tongue of indigenous, national and endangered communities.
He said that since the province's journalism sector is at a crossroads of unprecedented opportunities and serious challenges, only if professional insecurity and technological challenges can be addressed with the right policy and readiness can the journalism of the mofussil become stronger and more self-reliant.
He said that if the journalism sector of Koshi Province can adapt to modern digital technology while maintaining credibility and independence, it can become an exemplary and exemplary model for the country.
There are 96 regularly published newspapers in Koshi Province. Of which, 17 are daily, 73 are weekly, 4 are monthly, 1 is bimonthly and 1 is quarterly.
Under electronic media, 7 are televisions, and 85 are operational out of a total of 129 registered FM radios, the report presented by the Kazi states. The only FM radio registered at the local level is Aathrai. There are 397 online media outlets in the province.
