Work is underway to reopen the flood-damaged BP Highway to traffic from the second week of Ashad. In many places, gravel work has been done and in some places, large stones have been placed to prepare the road for the monsoon season.

Currently, vehicles are being driven by constructing a diversion on the Roshi River. Due to occasional floods, there are problems with traffic. Floods wash away the diversion and temporarily construct it again to allow vehicles to drive.

Suman Yogesh, Chief of the Road Division Office, Bhaktapur, said that preparations are being made to allow vehicles to drive from the second week of Ashad on the new tricycle that is being built keeping in mind the monsoon season. ‘We are still in a position to drive vehicles from above in four places, the track road has not been opened to stop the work because the monsoon has not yet occurred,’ he said, ‘If there is a flood, and the vehicles cannot drive due to the diversion of the river below, we will start driving from above.’

He said that a section of Charsaybensi, Boksikuna, Kaldhunga and Dalabensi has been prepared. ‘If there is a flood elsewhere, there is no situation where the vehicles will stop,’ he said, ‘The section to be built by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is being filled with soil and placed with boulders (large stones), so there will be no need to drive vehicles from the river in this section during the rainy season.’

He clarified that since driving on the road built above the river would stop the work, the road was being driven from the river until the rainy season begins. ‘The foundation of the RCC wall has been completed and the work on it is underway. The only thing left to do is to put gravel on the road that is being built before the monsoon,’ he said. ‘So far, preparations are underway to use the new track from 15 Ashar.’

The road will not be blacktopped now. ‘We will make arrangements to use the gravel road and use the vehicle. We will start the blacktop work in the next fiscal year,’ he said. ‘Before the monsoon, we will build a road up to 7 meters high and put gravel on the road.’ He said that after the monsoon, the road will be built up to 10 meters high from the river and blacktopped.
The flood of Asoj 2081 damaged a 30.5 km area along the highway from Bhakundeboshi to Nepalthok.

The work has been progressed by making three packages, 3 towards Kavre and 1 towards Sindhuli. The Lama-Nawakantipur JV has been awarded the contract for the 11 km section from Bhakundebensi to Charsayabesi of the two-lane highway. The Khani-Kamaljit-Awan JV is working on the 9 km section from Charsayabesi to Dalabesi. The agreement for both contracts was signed in Ashar 082.

The contract for the 2.3 km section from Piple to Dalabesi was signed with Uma & Company-Bhandari-Amarjyoti JV in Kartik 082. The 5 km section from Barkhe Khola to Nepalthok falls in Sindhuli. The contract for that section has been awarded to Kharidhunga-Ghising-Kshitij JV. According to the agreement, the work on all sections should be completed within 2 years.

The road division office in Khalte, Sindhuli, which is working to ply vehicles on the new track in the Sindhuli section even before the monsoon became active, said Parasmani Hamal, the head of the road division office. ‘In 3 out of 5 km sections, the entire road was washed away by the flood, two sections near Nepalthok bridge and in Kaldhunga, work has been done to ply vehicles on the new track,’ he said.

The work on the 120-meter section under Aapghari is not yet complete. He claims that arrangements will be made to ply vehicles during the monsoon even if boulders are placed there. He says that since the manpower and machinery are ready for the monsoon, it will be easy to work immediately if any problems arise.

The foundation stone for the construction of a 3.2 km road in the Piple-Barkhekhola section of the BP Highway to be two-lane was laid on 11 Jestha. The flood of Asoj 2081 damaged a 30.5 km area along the highway from Bhakundebensi to Nepalthok. Of which JICA will build only 3.2 km of the damaged section. Apart from this, 27.3 km has been contracted and work has already started a year ago.

3.2 km of the road is being constructed with a grant of Rs 2.6 billion from Japan. Its construction should be completed by Mangsir 2084. The construction contract has been taken by the Japanese company Shimizu Corporation. Work is being done to enable vehicles to ply on the new track and the concerned offices have been asked to prepare to avoid problems during the rainy season, said Ashish Gajurel, Chairman of the Infrastructure Development Committee of the House of Representatives. ‘As the monsoon season is about to begin, I am reaching the BP Highway as usual. This is also the road leading to my constituency,’ he said. ‘The newly constructed track has been prepared so that vehicles can ply on the road at any time.’

He said that an environment should not be created where vehicles will stop during the monsoon. ‘The construction of the track of the entire road is being delayed, we are asking for the speed of the work to be increased,’ he said. ‘We need to increase the speed of the work by adding more people.’
