A Nepali Sherpa guide father and son from Makalu in Sankhuwasabha have set a world record on Everest this season.

42-year-old Chhangwa Sherpa from Norbugaun in Makalu and his 20-year-old son Lakpa Tashi Sherpa have created history by successfully climbing Everest twice in the spring climbing season.

‘We, the Bauchoras, climbed Everest twice in 6 days (on Jestha 3 and 9),’ Chhangwa told Kantipur on Wednesday, ‘No one has ever claimed to climb Everest twice in the same season.’  We have also started the application process for the Guinness Book of World Records for this record.'

According to Thaneshwor Guragain, general manager of Seven Summit Treks, the first record of a father-son climbing Everest together was set by Jean-Noel Roche and his son Bertrand Roche of France on October 7, 1990. 'But this is a new world record set by Chhangwa and Lakpa Tasi by climbing together twice in the same season,' said General Manager Guragain.

Chhangwa has been working as a climbing guide with Seven Summit Treks for 9 years, while Lakpa has also been working with the same company since last year. This is Lakpa's second attempt at climbing Everest. He returned from Camp 4 last year.

According to General Manager Guragain, the two have become the first father-son duo in the world to successfully climb Everest twice in the same climbing season, with a gap of just 5 days, 21 hours and 59 minutes between their successful ascents. According to the company, they did not set any record. But both ascents were completed as part of their regular professional responsibilities of taking different international teams to the summit of Everest.

Guragain said that their less than a week-long journey in the 'death zone' of Everest has once again proven the unique ability and dedication of Nepali high-mountain guides.

Chhangwa and Lakpa had successfully taken Chinese climber Qiulong Peng to the summit of Everest on Jestha 3 on behalf of Seven Summit Treks. This was their first joint ascent. But for Chhangwa, this was his ninth successful ascent of Everest, while for Lakpa, it was his first ascent of Everest.

After bringing Chinese climber Peng safely to the base camp, they barely had time to rest. Less than six days later, they guided India's prestigious NSG Black Cats commando team. Their names were already registered in the world record the moment they reached the peak with this team on Jestha 9. However, Chhangwa said that they were not immediately aware of it.

Recalling the experience of the second ascent, Chhangwa said, "At that moment, I thought as a father - how many people will get the opportunity to climb Everest twice like this? It was a truly special experience." For Lakpa too, the spring season of 2026 has become the most important turning point in life. He is currently studying English to communicate with international climbing teams and plans to continue his higher education along with his mountaineering.

This historic achievement has caught the attention of the international mountaineering community. The company has praised the dedication and professional skills of the father-son duo in a statement. The statement said, “Chhangwa Sherpa and Lakpa Tasi Sherpa represent the true spirit of modern mountain guides. They did not create history for fame or personal glory, but for the excellence of their professional responsibilities. Leading two different international teams to the summit of Everest in less than six days is an example of extraordinary endurance and skill. It is even more inspiring to see a father and son achieve such a feat together. ’

According to Guragain, managing director of Seven Summit Treks, Chhangwa, who is also a father of two sons, has successfully climbed 35 mountains above 8,000 meters while guiding in various mountains in Nepal and abroad. He is now transferring that experience and knowledge to Lakpa.

The father and son have now returned to Kathmandu after the spring climbing season ended.
