An employee of Tribhuvan International Airport has been arrested with foreign and domestic currencies worth 5.451 million rupees. The Airport Security Police Office has arrested Kamal Narayan Biswas, 50, of Sunsari and Banasthali, Kathmandu. According to Airport Police SP Rajkumar Silwal, he was working as a ‘Ground Equipment Operation (GEO)’ at the airport. On Monday, he was going to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on a visit visa. During that time, the police searched his luggage after it looked suspicious.
Police say that foreign currencies were found hidden in his bag. US dollars 14,850, Omani riyals 2,970, Pakistani 3,540, Malaysian ringgit 23,632, Sri Lankan 7,770, and Japanese 41,000 were recovered from him. West African CFA francs and Nepali rupees worth 1.1 million were recovered.
Initial investigation revealed that he had previously traveled abroad 26 times. During interrogation after his arrest, he claimed that he took the money to bring gold and other items. He claimed that he took the Nepali rupees because his friend asked him to bring them.
However, due to his attempt to travel abroad from the airport without being identified and other suspicious circumstances, the police have sent him to the Revenue Investigation Department, Pulchowk, for further investigation.
