It has been 18 years since the country practiced republicanism as a result of the peaceful people's movement called by the then seven political parties against the autocratic monarchy and the armed struggle waged by the rebel Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).

Republic Day is celebrated to perpetuate the memory of that historic day on 15th Jestha 2065 BS, when the first meeting of the popularly elected Constituent Assembly ended the autocratic monarchy that had existed in Nepal for 240 years and declared a federal democratic republic.

On the same day, 15th Jestha, the Nepali people achieved freedom, an inclusive proportional democratic republic with liberal social justice, and citizen supremacy. Republic Day is also a celebration of the people's victory over dynastic rule.

The federal democratic republic has ensured all political rights to the people to move forward unitedly for a prosperous future. The first task of a democratic republic is to raise the prestige of Nepal and Nepalis on the world stage by ensuring the problems of citizens, including education, health, public transport, and social security, and ending poverty.

Since the core spirit of the republican constitution is to act in accordance with the expectations and sentiments of the people, it is equally necessary to establish this day as a pillar of democracy by maintaining unwavering faith in the rights of the common citizen. A democratic republic is not only a political system but also a system of governance and lifestyle, and is seen as a product of liberal ideals.

Since a democratic republic is the best among the systems of governance in practice in the world, it is a strong weapon for improving the living standards of the people and the prosperity of the nation.

Meanwhile, the 19th Republic Day is being celebrated with grandeur and joy by organizing various programs across the country today. President Ram Chandra Poudel and other dignitaries are participating in a special ceremony to be organized by the Republic Day Main Ceremony Committee at Sainik Manch Tundikhel. On that occasion, tributes will be paid to the martyrs who attained martyrdom for glorious change and the contribution of the elders who struggled, sacrificed and sacrificed for democracy will be remembered. Prime Minister Balendra Shah, however, will not address the gathering.

Many Nepalis had to endure imprisonment and torture in the movements and struggles to ensure social justice, independence and prosperity in the country and to establish democracy. Leaders of various parties have expressed their belief that today's day will further strengthen their commitment to the campaign to make citizens prosperous and empowered and happy in an environment of democratic culture.

They have expressed that they have a responsibility to increase production, fairly distribute opportunities, promote employment and maintain good governance to raise the living standards of the people in a democratic environment. The message states that while ensuring prosperity with a strong economy for today's generation, the coming generation should be determined to provide a strong, united, liberal state with an original character and the highest democratic culture. If we move forward unitedly and in accordance with the mandate, referendum and constitutional provisions, the federal democratic republican governance system in Nepal can become strong, consolidated and robust.

It is necessary to develop a democratic lifestyle at all levels and sections of society and create awareness to institutionalize the republic at the citizen level. The democratic republican governance system should be able to include every Nepali citizen in nation-building by focusing on development, good governance, prosperity and national pride.

On the occasion of Republic Day, President Ram Chandra Poudel has said that achieving the goals of good governance, development and prosperity by strengthening responsible and people-oriented service delivery through the federal democratic republican governance system is today's national need.

President Poudel, while expressing his best wishes on the occasion of the 19th Republic Day, pointed out the need for cooperation between all levels of government, the private sector and civil society to achieve social justice, economic prosperity and inclusive development envisioned by the Constitution.

He said, "On Republic Day, I cordially appeal to all political parties, civil society and all concerned to contribute from their respective fields to build a civilized, cultured and harmonious society by achieving sustainable, broad and equitable economic growth while keeping Nepal's independence, sovereignty, geographical integrity, national unity, independence, national interest and self-respect intact."

Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has pointed out the need to move forward with firm determination to make democracy more vibrant on the basis of liberal ideals, inclusiveness, equality and justice.

He said, ‘A republic is a system of government of the people, where all power is vested in the people. The core essence of a republic is for the people’s elected representatives to fulfill their responsibilities towards the people. Only by moving forward by equally assimilating the rights and duties given by the constitution can our federal democratic republican system remain strong, robust and vibrant.’

National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal has said that the alternative to a republic would be a more advanced and prosperous republic. He said this while expressing his best wishes to all Nepali sisters and brothers at home and abroad on the occasion of Republic Day, the day when the federal democratic republic of Nepal, established through the historical struggle, sacrifice and sacrifice of the Nepali people, was formally declared.

Chairman Dahal said that it is the need of the hour to stand firmly in favor of running the state with good governance by building a socialist-oriented self-reliant economy as specified by the constitution.

Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has called for a firm resolve to make the values and norms of the democratic republic more mature and result-oriented.

She said, ‘On this auspicious occasion of Republic Day, I call upon all state bodies, political parties and the general public to be firm in making the values and norms of the federal democratic republic more mature and result-oriented.
