Manish Khanal, an MP from the ruling National Independent Party (NISP), has demanded that the government make legal arrangements to provide internships for law students.
MP Khanal also expressed the view that the government can systematize their internships by linking them with government bodies. He argued that the government should not delay in making proper arrangements for law students, as it is difficult for them to get both remuneration and respect when they go to law firms for internships. MP Khanal also emphasized that the government should arrange a special fund for research in the legal field.
He said, "We have a lot of problems in knowing where law students should go for internships and what to do. If we go and work in a law firm, there is no remuneration according to the effort. There is no respect either. We have many ministries within Singha Durbar. There are many departments. We can connect every law student with a government body. If this can be done, I don't think they will have any problems getting internships. If the ministry paid attention to this, law students would be relieved. The Law Ministry should have provided funds for research in this area as well.’
MP Khanal also warned the government to allow colleges to operate only as per the need of legal manpower. He said that it is also necessary to improve the examination system set for granting advocate licenses.
