The Constitutional Council has recommended Manoj Kumar Sharma for the vacant post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Balendra Shah recommended Justice Sharma as the 33rd Chief Justice.

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee will conduct a hearing after the Council's recommendation. After the committee approves the hearing, the President will appoint him as the Chief Justice. The hearing will take some time.

After the retirement of the then Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, the Supreme Court was functioning on an interim basis. Senior Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla was leading the court in an acting capacity. The Judicial Council had earlier sent a roster of six permanent judges of the Supreme Court who were qualified for the position of Chief Justice. The Constitutional Council has recommended the future Chief Justice from the same roster. The Judicial Council had on February 26 sent the names of the senior-most Supreme Court judges Malla, Kumar Regmi, Hari Prasad Phuyal, Manoj Kumar Sharma, Nahakul Subedi and Til Prasad Shrestha for the future Chief Justice.
