Ujjaya Party Nepal Chairman Kulman Ghising has demanded that the government solve the problems of squatters and irregular settlers in a long-term manner with humane sensitivity.
Talking to media persons after an on-site inspection of the squatter shelter (holding center) in Kirtipur, Chairman Ghising said that it is sad that the displaced people were removed without proper management. During the inspection, Chairman Ghising mentioned that the condition of the squatters in the shelter is very difficult. It has been informed that 3,159 people have been screened there so far.
He drew the attention of the government to immediately transfer the displaced people to a safe place and provide permanent management. He said that the uncertainty of the settlement has seriously affected the education of children and the health of citizens. He called the recent suicide incident sad and stressed that the government should be serious about such issues.
Since the government has a two-thirds majority and a clear term of five years, he suggested that it should move forward in a sensible manner without making hasty decisions.
Chairman Ghising said that the problem of squatters is a common problem across the country and that there should be a distinction between the real squatters and the wealthy class who are grabbing government land. Urging not to thwart the right to housing and land guaranteed by the constitution, he urged the government to bring a framework for integrated management by linking education, health and employment.
