The Supreme Court has ordered the appearance of businessman Deepak Bhatt in custody in a money laundering case.

A single bench of Justice Abdul Aziz Musalman ordered Bhatt to be presented in court. The court also issued a show cause order in the name of the defendant while hearing a writ filed by Bhatt's wife Ayushma Nepal on Monday, claiming illegal detention.

He has been accused of money laundering by manipulating the acquisition of licenses and share purchases of hydropower, insurance, microfinance, travel agencies, and educational institutions. There are also allegations of 'lobbying' at the political level and appointing people who are favorable to him in the leadership of regulatory bodies and making decisions to benefit from them, and amassing illegal wealth.
