The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation has started testing actual squatters through the Land Records Information Management System.

Joint Secretary and Spokesperson of the Ministry Ganesh Prasad Bhatta informed that the system has been started to find out whether or not land is owned by the claimed squatters in any place in the government records in the country. He said that the testing work is being carried out transparently, effectively and economically through various policies, rules and procedures as well as electronic means.

'Currently, the work of testing the names of squatters within the Kathmandu Valley is being done as directed by the Ministry of Urban Development. After this, the squatters across the country will be identified gradually,' he said, 'After the actual squatters are tested, it will be easier for their management.'

There are 110 land revenue and 21 land reform and land revenue offices under the ministry.

The ministry has written to all 753 local levels to inform them about the staff, technical manpower, professional skills, technology and other resources required to provide land-related services at the local level. It is stated that the bodies under the ministry will conduct training, coaching and skill development programs for those local levels on the basis of priority and hand over responsibilities to them.

Spokesperson Bhatta said that the ministry will provide necessary support and coordination if the local levels manage the staff. When the local levels take responsibility for land administration, geographical testing will be easier and faster services can be provided to the people, he said.
