A plan is being made to transport water from Sisneri and Kogate rivers in Makwanpur to the Kathmandu Valley. A detailed project report (DPR) has also been prepared after a study has been underway to transport water from Sisneri and Kogate rivers to Kathmandu for 5 years.
There is a plan to discharge water taken from the Dobhan Paiyudamar of Bhimphedi Rural Municipality-8 and Sisneri Rural Municipality-3 in the northern area of Makwanpur to a tank in Bhainsepati in Lalitpur. A plan has been made to distribute the water collected in Bhainsepati to various parts of Kathmandu. Water is being collected in a 50-meter-long and 65-meter-high dam at the Dobhan Paiyudamar of Kogate River in Bhimphedi and the Sisneri River in Indrasarobar Rural Municipality, and pumped to the valley through a pipeline.
Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board Executive Director Dr. Dol Prasad Chapagain said that water is being taken from the Paiyudamar estuary to solve the water problem in the valley. The water collected by building a dam in Paiyudamar will be pumped to Dabrang Danda in Sisneri Rural Municipality-3 and from there, the water will reach Makkhubesi in Lalitpur, which is 9 kilometers away, through gravity flow without pumping.
Director Chapagain said that a ‘treatment plant’ will be built in Makkhubesi to purify water. He said that there is a plan to double pump the water from the treatment plant and then pour it into a tank in Bhaisepati. Bhaisepati is 20 kilometers away from Paiyudamar. ‘Water will be distributed to the Kathmandu Valley through a 20-kilometer pipeline,’ he said.
This project, which will be built at a cost of about 33 billion, will discharge 140 million liters of water daily in the rainy season and 80 million liters in the dry season into the Bhainsepati tank. Executive Director Chapagain said that this project will be built with the joint investment of international donors, the Government of Nepal and the Kathmandu Valley Water Management Board. He said that the construction of the project is aimed to start within 2 years.
The site where the dam will be built in Paiyudamar, about 100 meters above the Kathmandu-Terai/Madhesh Fast Track, is in Bhimphedi Rural Municipality. Paiyudobhan is the confluence of Sisneri and Kogate rivers. After the water of both rivers mixes and flows, it merges with the Bagmati River, about 300 meters below. Bhimphedi Rural Municipality Chairman Hidam Lama said that the municipality has been coordinating and giving consent to take water from here to solve Kathmandu's drinking water problem.
Chairman Lama said that a public hearing will be held soon on the economic, social, physical and cultural impacts of this project on the affected areas. Chairman Lama said that the water from both rivers is not currently being used.
