Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol has directed to start the work of protecting the public land that was cleared by removing the squatter settlements.

Inspecting the area cleared on the banks of the Bagmati River in Thapathali on Saturday, she directed to coordinate with the Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee and other relevant offices to install fences to protect the area that was cleared and will be cleared now.

Acting Mayor Dangol also inspected the physical condition of the colony in Ichangu, Nagarjuna. According to Ward No. 11 Chairperson and Metropolitan Building Management Committee Coordinator Hiralal Tandukar, there were 332 houses and huts in the ward including Thapathali and Bansighat. Of these, 136 houses and huts on the Thapathali side have been demolished.

There were 162 households in Ward No. 9 and 476 households in Ward No. 31 in the informal settlement from Sinamangal to Baneshwor Campus. Of these, the households in Ward No. 9 were vacated on Baisakh 12.

According to the report prepared by the empowered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee in 2079 BS, there are 3,496 households in informal settlements on the banks of the river in the valley. The committee's report shows that there are 2,245 households in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, 90 in Kageshwari Municipality, 156 in Budhanilkantha, 17 in Lalitpur Metropolitan City, and 773 in Bhaktapur Municipality.

Since some houses may have been added in the three-year period, it is estimated that there are about 4,000 informal settlements in the Kathmandu Valley.
