The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that it has intensified the rescue operation of Nepalis who have been scammed by online digital scamming centers operating in the Southeast Asian region.

According to the Ministry's spokesperson Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri, a total of 612 Nepalis have been rescued and repatriated from Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos so far. According to the ministry, 487 of those rescued are from Cambodia, 111 from Myanmar, 8 from Laos and 6 from Thailand.

The Nepali embassies in Thailand and Myanmar are actively coordinating and cooperating with local bodies for the rescue operation. The travel documents of 53 more people have been prepared and preparations are underway to repatriate them soon, the ministry said. The number of Nepalis visiting Cambodia for various purposes has reached 21,000 since 2021, and it is estimated that many of them may have been involved in such suspicious scam centers.

The Cambodian government has recently arrested 9 Nepalis on charges of involvement in various criminal activities. According to spokesperson Chhetri, five of the arrested people will be presented at the Siem Reap Provincial Court on charges of organized crime.

The remaining four have been detained for investigation on charges of involvement in body-slaying, torture and violent activities. With this, the total number of Nepalis arrested in Cambodia in recent times has reached 14.
